Society for New Communications Research Issues New Whitepaper, “Exploring the ROI of Online Press Releases”

October 20, 2008 | 5 Comments

Study’s Findings to Be Presented in a Webinar and at 3rd Annual SNCR Research Symposium

Palo Alto, Calif. - October 21, 2008 — Online distribution is changing the nature of press releases, repurposing them into news releases used equally by PR and marketing professionals as a communications tool to reach multiple audiences and to achieve several different goals. As opposed to traditional press releases, which were a channel for communicating with the media, online press releases present the opportunity to reach the public directly, according to a new research study, “Exploring the ROI of Online Press Releases,” sponsored by Vocus and conducted by the Society for New Communications Research.

The full executive summary of the study has been published as a free whitepaper and is available for download at http://sncr.org/2008/08/06/research-publications/. In addition, a paper based on the findings will be published in the upcoming issue of the Society for New Communications Research’s Journal of New Communications Research.

The research sponsor, Vocus, will also present a webinar on the study featuring Shel Holtz and Dr. Mihaela Vorvoreanu, the SNCR Fellows who led the study, along with Jen McClure, SNCR executive director and Jiyan Wei of PR Web/Vocus, titled “Understand the True Value of Online Press Releases.” This free webinar will take place on Thursday, October 23rd from 3:00 - 4:00pm ET. More information and online registration is available at: https://event.meetingone.com/mo.cfm/en/page=frm.register.

The full findings of the study will also be presented at the 3rd Annual Society for New Communications Research Symposium, which will be held on November 14th in Cambridge, Mass. See http://sncr.org/symposium08/. for more information and to register.

The purpose of this research study was to identify and analyze current patterns in the uses of online press releases. More than 400 communications professionals responded to an online survey conducted by SNCR in conjunction with TWI Surveys. In addition, SNCR conducted in-depth interviews with PR and marketing professionals, leading to detailed case studies, which will be made available by SNCR in the full research report.

Key Findings include the following:

* The goals for online press releases have expanded beyond the traditional objectives of increasing an organization’s visibility and credibility and announcing news, to include reaching customers directly with marketing and sales messages, creating online content, and search engine optimization (SEO).

* Reaching bloggers and new media outlets has become nearly as important as reaching traditional media.

* The top four measures of success for online press releases include: 1) the number of times the release is republished on websites; 2) the number of times the release is viewed online; 3) the publication of an article based on the release; 4) media interviews resulting from the release.

“With the advent of new online communication channels, the goals, target audiences, and overall scope of press releases have evolved, transforming the press release into a new communication tool used by PR and marketing alike,” noted Dr. Mihaela Vorvoreanu, Ph.D. SNCR Fellow, who authored the whitepaper.

“This study has allowed us to examine the changing roles of PR and marketing in the context of how the press release is now being used. This is a vivid example of the converging and evolving nature of the communications profession as the result of new online media and communications channels,” added Shel Holtz, SNCR Founding Fellow.

Society for New Communications Research Announces “SNCR Byte”

October 13, 2008 | 1 Comment

ActiveAccess, a digital content delivery platform offered by BIA Information Network (BIN), has designed and launched “SNCR Byte,” a dynamic desktop application, to be used by the Society for New Communications Research. After downloading to a computer, “SNCR Byte” will provide SNCR’s members and followers current news and information, announcements on the release of new research, events and programs, and audio and video content streamed directly to the user’s desktop.

The “SNCR Byte” application will provide critical information to their members.

“SNCR Byte” will also provide access to a separate screen offering the SNCR publication website, New Communications Review, complete with its daily news, tips, tidbits, featured videos and podcasts, and industry blog listings. The application will also push alerts to users based on geography and industry interests.

“As a progressive new media organization we find value in ActiveAccess for the effect it can have on traditional methods of business communication and the level of service we can provide to our members” said Jennifer McClure, executive director of the Society for New Communications Research. “ActiveAccess provides us with an innovative new communications tool that enables us to reach our audience in new ways.”

ActiveAccess can operate in any PC environment and does not interfere with corporate servers or network environments. (A Mac version of the application is planned for release in Q1 2009.) Once installed, the “SNCR Byte” icon will appear on a user’s desktop. It can be activated with a mouse click or by SNCR itself when it needs to issue scrolling text or alerts to its members. This feature appealed to SNCR because it allows them to immediately get the attention of their members and Fellows whenever necessary in a customizable way.

“Associations such as SNCR benefit from ActiveAccess’ unique content delivery platform because they can communicate using a method that makes them stand out from the daily news and information noise,” said Tom Buono, president and CEO of BIA Financial Network, parent company of BIA Information Network. “The application’s ability to target information through zip code and other user preferences also adds to its dynamic ability to reach one hundred or one thousand members at once.”

Members and non-members of SNCR will be able to access the desktop application through a light-weight download that requires about as much memory as a single webpage, containing no adware, spyware or malware. The application is flexible in the sense that it can be customized in many ways. Once installed it only requires access to the Internet.
