Society for New Communications Research Announces 2006 Award Winners

Boston, Mass., Nov. 2, 2006 – The Society for New Communications Research (http://www.sncr.org) has announced its 2006 award winners. The Society’s awards program honors innovative organizations and professionals who are pioneering the use of social media (i.e., blogs, wikis, podcasts, collaborative tools and other forms of participatory communications) in the areas of marketing, public relations and advertising, politics, entertainment, academics, and community and cultural development. More than twenty Award of Excellence and Award of Merit winners were announced in three categories at the Society’s inaugural awards gala, which was held at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston, Mass. on November 1, in conjunction with the Society’s inaugural research symposium.

Awards of Merit and Awards of Excellence were presented in three categories, including:

· SNCR Professional Awards, honoring leading new communications thinkers, bloggers, journalists, citizen journalists and professional communicators
· SNCR Academic Awards, recognizing leading work/research/studies from students and academic institutions
· SNCR Business Awards, honoring organizations that are successfully adopting new communications models and leveraging them in innovative ways for business purposes

In the Education category, two Awards of Merit were presented:
· Vanderbilt University News Service
· Elizabeth Farrell for a student research project.

The Award of Excellence in the Professional category was presented to:
Margaret Saizan of the Beyond Katrina blog (www.hurricane-katrina.org.)

Awards of Merit in this category were presented to:
· Ned Lundquist for The Job of the Week Network
· Sharon Whiteley of ThirdAge, Inc.

Several organizations were honored with Awards of Excellence in the Business category. These included: BzzAgent, Inc.
· Cisco Systems, Inc.
· Atwood Partners
· HTC
· iPressroom Corporation
· Microsoft Xbox (with Edelman)
· Seagate Technology
· Stormhoek Winery
· vidavee
In addition, eight companies and non-profit organizations were honored with the Award of Merit in the Business category:
· Avent America (with Edelman)
· The Bivings Group
· Communication Data Services
· Fiberlink Communications
· Mobile Enterprise Alliance, Inc.
· Spherion
· Texell Interactive Media
· WorldWIT
Award nominations were submitted as case studies, and reviewed by a panel of ten judges, including SNCR research fellows, advisors, members of the SNCR Best Practices committee, vendor council members and representatives from the Society’s organizational affiliates.

“These award-winning organizations, individuals and programs exemplify the mission of this awards program: the successful and innovative use of new communications solutions and social media practices to enhance communications and relationships,” commented Mike Manuel, SNCR Best Practices committee chairman.
